MessageLabs cleans up its image
Security vendor buys image composition analysis technology partner, Fortium ICA
Email and web security vendor MessageLabs has added image analysis to its in-house capabilities by acquiring technology partner Fortium ICA for an undisclosed sum.
MessageLabs has used Fortium ICA’s image composition analysis technology in its Image Control service for several years. The service prevents unwanted or offensive images from entering or leaving a corporate network.
Fortium was previously a subsidiary of Fortium Technologies, a video copy control and fingerprint detection specialist.
Stephen Chandler, chief financial officer of MessageLabs, said: “Recognising the importance of image analysis technology, MessageLabs was an early investor in Fortium ICA, so we are delighted to now be able to bring this unique technology in house.”
MessageLabs - which earlier this month indicated it is considering an IPO - claimed Fortium ICA’s technology is the most widely used in the market.
“Controlling the distribution of inappropriate or confidential images is an important part of protecting a business from legal liability, damaged reputation and loss of intellectual property,” added Chandler.
Mathew Gilliat-Smith, chief executive of Fortium Technologies, said: “After working closely with MessageLabs for many years on the development of our technology, we are confident that this move will benefit the technology itself as well as the OEM partners and all their users.”
