AMD PCs ready to go Live
AMD releases its LIve PC Media Center PC to rival Intel's Viiv technology
AMD has finally managed to launch a rival to Intel’s Viiv technology with the release of its AMD Live ‘easy-to-use’ Media Center PC.
AMD has been slow off the blocks in trying to crack the ‘living room’ market, but is hoping that its new approach, supported by a raft of PC partners, will help it close the gap with Intel’s Viiv initiative. AMD Live is described as a full-featured Media Center PC designed to allow users to organise and share digital content around the home or on the go.
Vendors supporting Live include Hewlett-Packard, Alienware, Acer and Fujitsu Siemens, as well as a host of system builders in Western European and the US, AMD revealed.
From this month, AMD Live PCs will be powered by the Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processors and will boast the AMD Live Entertainment Suite, a collection of five services and applications that AMD will rebrand and let users download free from its website.
The AMD Live suite will later come preloaded on vendors’ systems once new Live-branded PCs start
to ship. They include a streaming download service powered by Orb Networks, the Compress tool for shrinking recorded TV, Network Magic to help with setting up a secure home network, the LogMeIn remote access tool and StreamLoad’s Media Vault for backing up content to secure online servers. Live PC users will get 25GB of free storage.
Gaith Kadir, AMD general manager, Middle East and Africa, said: “The AMD Live PC and Entertainment Suite represents the culmination of industry leading companies collaborating around open standards to deliver compelling entertainment solutions. With the AMD Live PC, we are delivering on a vision for merging broadcast TV content with interactive, personalised broadband applications and services, all without disrupting the devices already accepted and used by consumers in their homes today.”
Tom Anderson, vice president of marketing, global consumer PCs at Hewlett-Packard’s Personal Systems Group, said: “Today, customers are looking for PCs that will allow them to view, interact and play new content from broadcast television to music to games.
“By offering AMD Live branded PCs, our customers will have the ability to buy a PC that will meet their evolving entertainment needs.”
