Packeteer ties up high end

While rival Peribit targets small firms and branch offices

Rival vendors Packeteer and Peribit have introduced products targeting opposite ends of the WAN optimisation market.

At the high end, Packeteer's 10,000 series Layer 7 device offers full duplex 1Gbps throughput, while Peribit has launched a $1,895 device, the SR-15, for branch and small offices.

Packeteer has also upgraded its software to version 7.

Roger Hockaday, director of marketing for Packeteer in EMEA, said: "We've moved from where we were a couple of years ago, when we were going into companies with point solutions, to being more architectural. Our deployments are getting larger, and these customers may need gigabit connections in the future."

Steven Wastie, international marketing director at Peribit, said: "The SR-15 enables us to sell into the branch-office market and medium-sized companies. With the CMS-5 management software, someone with no technical knowledge can install it."

Peribit has added 120 customers worldwide to its roster in the past quarter.
