Micso gets into the Spirit

VAR implements new wireless infrastructure in its warehouse to help streamline packing operation

Take your pick: Misco has upgraded its whole warehouse management system

Online VAR Misco has chosen software application development and mobile computing provider Spirit Data Capture to upgrade its warehouse management system at its UK distribution centre.

Spirit proposed that the Greenock based warehouse needed a complete wireless infrastructure accompanied by Motorola MC9090 mobile computers, which would be used to streamline the company’s ‘pick and pack’ operations.

The MC9090 uses Microsoft Windows CE and offers support for full multi-mode wireless connectivity.

Clark Wainwright, MIS administrator at Misco, said: “Misco has been using PCs and printers to carry out its warehouse management. However, it decided that it needed a solution that would free it’s workforce from their PCs and the associated paperwork.”

Due to the large size of the warehouse, an 18 metre high scissor lift was needed for the installation of the wireless backbone, which enabled the whole site to be covered by just seven access points.

“The system has saved Misco and money and has increased the accuracy of the data it records. It now spends less time having to deal with errors at the Goods In stage. As stock is now ‘live’, it is available for sale in a much shorter timescale, which also increases customer satisfaction levels,” he added.

“By using wireless technology, Misco no longer has to run cabling all over the warehouse. New units can be added without having to consider how to connect them to the network, and how to can get power to them, said Wainwright.

Wainwright said that Misco is continuing to work closely with Spirit to develop the warehouse system further. The reseller is also looking at other devices that improve different departments within the warehouse, for instance the VAR is currently testing a wearable terminal.
