Europe set for major increase in SATA sales

latest research from MacArthur Stroud is good news for the channel

The channel may experience a boom in Serial ATA (SATA) sales across Europe in 2006, according to the latest report from analyst firm MacArthur Stroud International.

The research was carried out in the last quarter of 2005 to discover the demand for secondary storage in medium and large businesses in Europe.

MacArthur Stroud found that sales of SATA disk arrays used for backup and archiving will grow by more than half this year, and that such systems are expected to experience a compound annual growth rate of 45 per cent between 2006 and 2008.

Hamish MacArthur, chief executive of MacArthur Stroud, said there are multiple factors that will contribute to the increase in sales figures.

“This hints at 2006 being good for the channel in this market, as well as leading them into more opportunities by getting them in and talking to customers about secondary storage,” MacArthur said.

Earlier this month, Sony Europe’s Storage Solutions division unveiled AIT-1 Turbo and AIT-2 Turbo drives incorporating the SATA standard. MacArthur said that backup and archiving have become major priorities for end-users and vendors in the past 18 months.

“This growth is driven partly by the need for fast data recovery, as well as backup windows when backing up to disk,” she said

“The figures show that an uptake in sales is beginning to increase,” MacArthur added.

Martin Vessey, UK country manager at Access Distribution, said it is vital that organisations take data backup and archival seriously.

“We can see a 30 per cent increase at the moment, so 50 per cent would be exciting. For us it would lead to an increase in our sales revenue,” he said.
