AMD aims for a 64bit Commercial success

Vendor claims channel programme will boost VAR relationships

Channel players have welcomed a move by chip vendor AMD to create a global channel programme to help fuel sales of 64bit products.

AMD claimed its Commercial Channel Access (CCA) programme is designed to create the right environment in its AMD64 network of systems integrators and VARs.

Kevin Knox, vice-president of worldwide commercial business at AMD, said: “Today’s announcement marks another milestone in our commitment to customer-centric innovation and to the many strong, long-standing relationships we enjoy with our expanding network of channel customers.”

CCA provides partners with web-based access to channel tools, information, training and practical support, such as partner announcements, product information, access to AMD’s business development team and channel-specific marketing support.

As part of the new programme, AMD will also permit channel partners to join its recently created AMD Commercial Channel Council. This enables members to exchange opinions, receive early notification of AMD plans and gain special access to the vendor’s executives.

John Osborne, general manager of components and supplies at AMD distributor Computer 2000, said the programme is a step in the right direction. “The CCA programme is positive and shows AMD is making an investment in its channel partners. It is a starting point, but AMD needs to build on it and develop it further,” he said.

Martin Hingley, group vice-president of European systems at IDC, said: “As a two-tier model is often used in this space, it can be difficult to disseminate information to partners. This could be why AMD is looking to communicate more directly with its partners.

“This will benefit partners and help them to further understand the market and ultimately to sell more AMD components.”

Earlier this year, distributor MaxData promised its resellers inc-reased lead generation following its launch of a £5m telephone-based European advertising campaign. This kicked off with advertisements for the chip vendor (CRN, 4 July).
