Symantec scheme woos VARs

Launches first channel programme since Axent acquisition.

Symantec is to launch its first channel programme since it acquired direct security business Axent late last year (CRN, 3 November).

The new scheme will focus on four technical areas: virus protection and content management; firewall and virtual private network (VPN) technologies; intrusion detection systems; and vulnerability management. Resellers can train in all areas or specialise, becoming Security Resellers, Solutions Partners or Sales Partners.

Previously, Symantec offered only anti-virus courses and outsourced firewall training through distributor First Defence.

Aled Miles, managing director northern Europe at Symantec, said resellers had rightly asked questions of the Axent acquisition and whether it would cause Symantec to become more direct (CRN, 22 March).

However, John Jones, Symantec's channel sales director, said Symantec has converted Axent's direct model into a channel business. "This global partner launch is the result of integrating Axent into Symantec. The business will be completely indirect and we will expand our product range to give resellers access to Axent programmes not previously available to the channel," he said.

Jones said the partner launch consolidated the two companies' eight different channel programmes into one global framework that will launch on 23 July.

Nigel Lewis, managing director of Symantec reseller Computer Security Technology, said: "The new programme takes advantage of the broader scope of the company [following the Axent acquisition]. It makes us more aware of all the new product offerings, whereas under the old system they had been blinkered. It expands the company beyond the standard anti-virus market and they have been quick to implement the changes."
