President Williams

Networking manufacturer Lucent has appointed Andy Williams as its new European president. Williams joins from IBM, where he was general manager of Global Services. He replaces Dave Poticny, who has been appointed vice-president for Lucent’s developing markets.

Something in Mindjet Software vendor Mindjet is revamping its channel strategy to ease its entry into the enterprise space. New premium tier partners are being recruited in line with key Microsoft large account resellers, and the vendor has appointed Sigma Software Distribution as the sole MindManager VAR to support its expanding network of smaller resellers.

Sun serves up servers

Sun has announced a new family of enterprise-class x64 multi-core servers. The vendor has claimed the industry-standard servers use about a third the power, provide one-and-a-half times the performance, and cost half as much as comparably configured four-way servers from Dell.

Wake up little SuSE

ERP vendors Carmen Systems, Jeeves and Sage have said they will support the Novell SuSE Linux enterprise Server 9. The software providers have made their applications available on Open Source operating systems. The push is an attempt to reverse slow adoption of earlier versions of the server.

Risky business

Computer users are more likely to engage in riskier online behaviour at work, such as downloading potentially malicious files or surfing suspicious web sites, than at home, according to an online survey of 1,200 corporate end-users by Trend Micro.

Profit warning from DCC

Irish distributor DCC issued a profit warning last week stating that group profits for the six months to 31 March 2006 are likely to be down by 10 per cent. DCC said that the tough trading conditions experienced in its IT distribution division since late 2004 further deteriorated in July and August. Gem Distribution, DCC's UK business, which distributes games and retail software, has been hit hard by the decline.
