Channel at centre of Centrino launch

UK system builders play key role in helping Intel launch its Centrino mobile processors and chipsets at CeBIT

UK system builders played a key role in helping Intel launch its Centrino mobile processors and chipsets at the recent CeBIT Show in Hanover, Germany.

Hi-Grade Computers and Rock Computers were two of Intel's key launch partners and showcased new notebooks based on Centrino.

Their involvement supports Intel's claim that the system builder sector continues to be very important to its business.

Speaking to CRN, Daryl Ganas, Intel's director of reseller channel operations for EMEA, said: "Some of the system builders we deal with have a very strong image, with some in the UK being very strong in the enterprise space.

"Hi-Grade and Rock are two system builders that will be helping us to launch in Europe.

"In all, there will be 28 channel and system builder partners participating in our launches across Europe."

Hi-Grade used the show to introduce its first generation of 'ultra-portable' notebooks using Centrino technology.

The Notino C1000 uses the new Mobile Pentium M processor, offers speeds of up to 1.6GHz, has a battery life of more than four hours, is 2.7cm thick and weighs just 2.2kg.

The notebooks also feature the integrated wireless Centrino technology.

Demetre Cheras, Hi-Grade's marketing director, said: "Up to now, 'ultra-portable' notebooks have been light enough to carry around but have been constrained by poor battery life and complex or limited connectivity.

"Centrino's advanced power optimisation features and easy wireless connection are ushering in a new generation of 'ultra-mobiles'.

"You will no longer need to be nervous about wandering too far from the nearest power outlet or network socket."

Craig Barrett, Intel's chief executive, agreed. "Unwiring the PC will change the way people use computers, allowing them to communicate, be productive or be entertained wherever and whenever they want," he said.

The Intel Centrino package is made up of Intel's 855PM chipset, PRO/Wireless 2100 network connection and Pentium M Processor.

The processors run at speeds of 1.6GHz, 1.5GHz, 1.4GHz and 1.3GHz. There is also a low-voltage option running at 1.1GHz and an ultra-low-voltage processor with a speed of 900MHz.
