Urban Wimax seeks to build City stronghold
Wireless network provider plans to recruit 12 resellers to ramp up its City of London business
Communications infrastructure provider Urban Wimax is looking for resellers to help ramp up its business in the City of London.
Urban Wimax provides connections for data, voice and video by using WiMAX network technology.
The vendor is looking to swell its channel ranks with local resellers in the London area.
Sasha Williamson, chief executive of Urban Wimax, told CRN: “We focus our infrastructure on the business district of the City at the moment. We sell direct to the reseller. We are in discussions with eight resellers and have officially signed one.”
Williamson said the firm is hoping to partner with IT services companies and voice and data resellers.
“Local IT services companies have an established local customer base. We want to recruit 12 partners by 2007,” he said.
Williamson claimed Urban Wimax will appeal to voice resellers that have accepted that their customer base is migrating to IP and want to maintain their margin.
“We see the channel as a valuable way forward for business. We can give resellers additional revenue, enable them to differentiate themselves, offer long term value to their customer base, and preserve and grow their margins,” Williamson claimed.
However, Jess Thompson-Hughes, managing director of wireless distributor React Technologies, was doubtful about the vendor’s business model and its focus on the London market.
“I can’t see there being much market take-up [for Urban Wimax’s offering]. Resellers can just build their own version of Urban Wimax’s offering if they want. I just don’t see the appeal of a fixed wireless connection in London,” he said.
Thompson-Hughes said London already has a robust wired infrastructure and that the City is swamped with companies that can offer a similar service to Urban Wimax’s.
“I would recommend that Urban Wimax goes for more under-serviced markets, such as parts of Devon, Cornwall, Scotland and Wales,” Thompson-Hughes said. C
