Vendors disclose strategy for SMP

As the release of new Windows NT draws near, vendors reveal SMP plans

As the next revision of Windows NT looms on the horizon, server vendors revealed their strategies for SMP computers. IBM and Apricot revealed the details of their Pentium Pro machines, while Compaq promised a 200MHz Pro server before June.

At the same time, IBM extended its US programme Tech Connect to the UK, France and Germany, while Compaq will introduce an upgrade scheme through resellers for its Proliant and Pro-signia ranges.

The IBM PC company introduced the 704 model, a quad server with four 166MHz Pentium Pros, with availability promised for the end of April. Apricot has renamed its Shogun server, the FT 4200, and will introduce quad 200MHz Pro machines in the summer.

Hugh Jenkins, server product manager at Compaq UK, said: 'We will go straight to 200MHz Pentium Pros before June. Our customers will be offered the ability to upgrade using our investment protection scheme.' Resellers will handle the programme.

Big Blue has introduced training and certification courses in Windows NT 3.51 to complement its existing Netware and Lan Server programmes. Other elements in the company's Tech Connect scheme include workshops for tweaking servers and the software that they use.
