Switching market on upward swing

Dell'Oro findings reveal that Cisco, HP and Juniper all enjoyed a strong Q4

Switching revenues grew 20 per cent sequentially in 2009's final quarter

Cisco, HP and Juniper all experienced solid growth in the Ethernet switch market in 2009, according to the latest figures from Dell’Oro Group.

The market watcher’s latest research reveals that the market grew almost 20 per cent sequentially during the fourth quarter of 2009, with Cisco, HP and Juniper adding just under $600m (£388m) in incremental revenues.

Alan Weckel, director of Ethernet switch research at Dell’Oro Group, said: " Year-end budget spending and supply constraints from the previous quarter helped propel market growth in Q4.

"We expect the market to continue to expand in 2010, especially as 10 Gigabit Ethernet continues to grow not only as a server connectivity technology, but also as an aggregation technology within the datacentre."

Dell’Oro’s figures also showed that the 10 Gigabit Ethernet segment was the only market to show sequential port and revenue growth in 2009, mainly due to the demand for purpose-built fixed 10 GE boxes for the datacentre.
