Mobile Focus: Give a hand for a Velo traveller

Philips Mobile Computing Group is set to launch a handheld PC in the UK, the Velo 1. The machine, which uses the Windows CE operating system, was demonstrated at Comdex in Las Vegas last year.

The Velo 1 comes with Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Inbox and Pocket Internet Explorer. It also has a short message service and a voice memo function, making it possible to record, store and playback voice messages.

Offering communication capabilities through a GSM link, the machine enables users to send and receive faxes and email, and provides internet access. The Velo 1 comes with a cable to connect its high-speed, 230Kbps serial port to a GSM phone.

When plugged in to the supplied docking station, the Velo Dock, it can be connected to a PC running Windows 95 to obtain seamless integration of data on the two machines.

The Velo 1 uses Philips? Two Chip PIC, comprising the PR31500 and UCB1100 chips and a software modem. The PR31500 is an embedded Risc processor based on a Mips R3000 core which can interface with high-speed serial buses and cellular phone networks.

The Velo 1 is scheduled for release in June and will cost about #600. Accessories will include a Velo-to-PC travelling cable, carrying case, and rechargeable batteries.
