No fans for PC component maker

But vendor hopes to win people over with its flexible attitude

Two suppliers have launched marketing initiatives that take treatment of fans to polar extremes. One has no time for fans, the other is dedicated to them.

German specialist PC and component maker Kontron has launched a base unit that has no fans. But the vendor hopes to win admirers with its flexibility.

Its Concept range of embedded-box PCs are designed to be tailored and rebadged by system builders and resellers to fit any specialist niche.

Kontron designs its own ATX motherboard to fit into diverse environments, such as factory floors, shops or entertainment areas, with systems custom built to be as small as 4cm high and 20cm square.

The motherboards are designed to dissipate heat from the CPU direct to the casing, meaning that fans are not needed and the PC casing needs no air holes.

“The closed cases will not prevent them from working,” said Kontron’s marketing vice president, Norbert Hauser.

“The boxes are easily configured and can run any application from automation, medical systems or even entertainment,” he added.

The attraction for resellers and OEMs is that they can get any form factor designed within five days, he said.

Kontron has named its supply system 5-5-5.

Meanwhile, distributor VIP Computer Centre has a different take on fans. It has created a microsite to help resellers get the most from its Thermaltake range of cooling systems, cases and fans.

The site features a price and model specification comparison table, background information and the latest deals, said VIP’s Thermaltake product manager Victoria Davies.

“This will be invaluable to resellers who will benefit from weekly price deals,” she said.
