Orlogix eases transfer torment
Transfer MyPC is more than just a good piece of kit - it's indispensable
PCs often come bundled with a lot of software, most of it useless and consigned to the bin as soon as the new macine has been booted up.
However, it's a pity that more PCs are not bundled with the excellent and inexpensive Transfer MyPC package from Orlogix.
Certain mainstream players such as Hewlett Packard and Dell have seen the value and offer it as an option, but there is a real opportunity for system builders to get in on the act.
As the name implies, Transfer MyPC allows for the transfer of settings, preferences and files from an old PC to a new one. Anyone with more than one PC under their belt knows getting information from one system to another can prove a real headache.
The software comes bundled with USB and parallel cables for all connectivity situations. Installation took about five minutes, starting with the old PC, followed by the new PC.
During the first installation, a wizard prompts the user with choices about what to transfer from the old system. And this is one of the key differences between Transfer MyPC and other so-called 'migration' software applications: users get to control fully what is transferred.
Once the software was installed, it prompted to hook up the systems with the USB cable and the transfer started, taking just a few minutes.
Those that want to start with a clean slate can choose not to transfer any old settings or preferences to the new PC. That leaves the very useful File Transfer Utility.
Once activated, an Explorer-style screen opens up with the contents of the old and new systems displayed in a split-screen. Simply drag and drop the files from the old PC to the new system. The USB connection allows for transfer rates of up to 50MB in 1.5 minutes.
In all, it took less than 25 minutes to install and transfer files from one system to the other. Obviously, being able to easily swap data back and forth between systems at any time means users also get a handy data back-up solution.
