Umax Set For Double Whammy
Macintosh clone manufacturer Umax is set to drop a bombshell at this week?s Cebit show in Hanover when it unveils a machine with both a Power PC and a Pentium processor in the same chassis.
Umax was one of the first Apple licensees and has recently set up a distribution deal with Ascot-based IMC.
A source close to Umax said: ?Umax will also introduce an Intel MMX Pentium system. The Power Pen implements dual processors, one a Pentium and one a Power PC chip.?
He said that the company was forced to go down the x86 route after the common reference platform for Power PC had faltered. ?Umax?s plan is to be in both platform areas,? he said. ?That?s because of the break-up.?
The Taiwanese company, which uses distributors throughout Europe, has spent the past weeks showing them its new machines in the run-up to Cebit, said the source.
According to US reports, the manufacturer will also show a dual-chip Pentium Pro machine, indicating its seriousness about entering the x86 market.
Umax has opened a PC and workstation group and will also exhibit a number of additional flatbed scanners at the show, which starts on 13 March. The company was unavailable to comment at press time.
