VAT fraudster on the loose
Warrant issued for participant in £827,000 chip scam
A Bristol Crown Court judge has issued a warrant for the arrest of Nasser Ahmed from Hounslow, a VAT fraudster who went on the run moments before a jury returned a guilty verdict for his role in an £827,000 VAT fraud.
Nasser Ahmed and Urfan Ahmed were accused of importing VAT-free computer chips, which were then sold to UK customers at prices including VAT.
Urfan Ahmed pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing. Nasser Ahmed was found guilty of cheating the public revenue and furnishing a false document.
Eddie Hunt, case progression officer at Bristol Crown Court, said: "Urfan Ahmed pleaded guilty and is to be sentenced on 23 March. Nasser Ahmed pleaded not guilty and, upon appearing in court on 17 February, didn't return for the verdict after his lunch."
