HDS introduces one of the first NCs
Former X Terminal vendor HDS has launched a #650 Network Computer that combines Internet access, Java and the ability to run PC, Unix and mainframe applications. Called the @workStation, its combination of Internet, PC and legacy abilities makes it not only one of the first available NCs, but gives it functionality beyond the basic level envisaged by Larry Ellison.
It is to be distributed in the UK by Compass Computer Group. HDS concedes that it has much work to do while the NC market remains fairly uncluttered.
The machine runs the HDS netOS, a system that runs Java applets, supports Internet protocols and has built-in networking. HDS is willing to license HDS netOS to other manufacturers. Pat Dunne, HDS European general manager, said: "We foresee a market among companies replacing PCs, replacing X Terminals, or simply trying something new. We are looking by next year to have signed between ten and 20 focused Vars. We are looking for partners with NT or Unix experience at top level. NCs themselves do not require too much learning." He said that while the initial idea of the NC was anti-Microsoft, HDS was anything but.
