Marengi ousts Markman from management team

Further evidence that the knives are out at Novell came last week as Joe Marengi, president of the company, removed VP and general manager Steve Markman from his team.

Marengi has concentrated on a small group of what he described as 'key managers' to report directly to him. 'Removing layers of management creates a fully integrated team with the customer at its centre.

'In today's market we must act at Internet speed, inside as well as outside our company,' he said.

The team includes Mary Burnside, VP of corporate services, Glenn Ricart, VP of technology, and CFO James Tolonen.

Marengi has also forced senior VPs in charge of legal, HR, marketing, sales and engineering management to report to him, suggesting some disarray within the company.

Markman joined Novell in 1994 and took over product group responsibilities in January this year. He has a new job at General Magic.
