ICL forces TKP to adopt Net Position in name change row

Web site development company The Knowledge Pool (TKP) has been forced to change its name to Net Position following pressure from ICL, which has a training programme with the same name.

The legal action threatened by ICL could have resulted in a High Court test case over use of domain names on the Internet, but TKP backed down after deciding it could not afford the financial risk.

Dominic Murphy, editorial director at the newly renamed Net Position, said the firm had considered fighting the case, after taking legal advice.

'We were advised by our QC that we had a 50/50 chance of success, but that it would cost a huge amount of money to fight it.'

'It is sad that we have lost the profile we had built up from magazine articles as The Knowledge Pool, but it is not really a disaster.'

The company had been trading for the past year as The Knowledge Pool, but has been called Net Position since the beginning of January. It is looking to set up relationships with dealers providing Internet/ intranet solutions to businesses.
