MMD deal sees Sun assemble a UK OEM channel

Sun Microsystems has launched itself into channel assembly, appointing Microprocessor and Memory Distribution (MMD) as its exclusive UK OEM partner.

In its capacity as OEM distributor/assembler, MMD will sell components to Vars and systems integrators, which they can sell as own-brand systems.

Dave Rose, product manager at MMD, said the configuration, which uses Sun?s Ultra AX server engine, is suitable as an intranet server for small ISPs. The server will be configured with a PCI bus.

MMD will also bundle the Solaris OS, encryption and firewall software. The server will cost about #2,500, offering a total intranet system to resellers for approximately #3,500.

There will also be an option for resellers to make additional margin by leasing hardware to internet service providers.

The move follows the appointment of Microage as Sun?s first US assembler/distributor.
