Sun takes Java to the networks

Sun Microsystems has introduced a number of Java-based network management applications, which it claims will enable network managers to offer component-based services.

The service driven networks initiative is targeted at telecoms companies and large corporate networks, offering a modular and more responsive way to manage multivendor networks.

The Java dynamic management kit is written in Java and combines push and component technology to develop services. By creating Java Beans, network managers can create and extend network management functions.

According to Steve Wilcox, Sun enterprise networking product manager, the Beans are accessible via any SNMP-compatible management application, but can be developed six times as fast as traditional SNMP applications.

The Solstice Enterprise Manager 2.1 provides a set of Java APIs for developing larger customised network management applications, accessed centrally via the browser-based Java management console.
