Mitsubishi cash injection aids Apricot growth.
Japanese electronics giant Mitsubishi Electric Corporation is to spend $200 million on developing a PC division, expanding its UK subsidiary Apricot Computers.
Apricot aims to increase its modest share of the corporate market through resellers, said channel marketing manager Alastair Carvlin. 'We need visibility at senior board level. Mitsubishi will help us push the Apricot brand.
UK support services will also improve.'
Mitsubishi aims to use the money to become a top 10 PC and server company within 10 years. Apricot MD Peter Horne has become president of the division, becoming the first non-Japanese divisional manager at Mitsubishi.
Apricot's Glenrothes plant will be expanded to produce 500,000 units a year and the firm will set up business units in London and Dusseldorf in 1996. Horne said Apricot will use its Net service Infotrade to target corporates, small businesses and the home market.
