Video outlook is promising

Video messaging market to reach $650m next year, reports Ovum

Worldwide spending on video messaging will total $650m next year, with video set to become an essential element of data services toward the end of the decade, analyst firm Ovum has claimed.

The firm is advising blue-chip businesses such as broadcasters to begin finding a role for video services.

"Mobile video will really take off in 2007 and 2008. By then, one in four users will be sending video messages," said Dario Betti, senior analyst at Ovum.

The company expects to see major developments by the end of 2004, as more 3G networks are launched.

"Video is the future, and operators and businesses need to ensure they're pushing it to consumers and sowing the seeds for future use," said Betti.

He added that video is an area of telecommunications that operators and blue-chip businesses know little about.

"We need proper market research and must launch some services. Then there will be lots of people interested in receiving content," he said.

Keith Yaxley, sales and marketing director at mobile data specialist vendor Data2Hand, said it is a technology that is looking for applications.

"When applications are developed, resellers will provide expertise in the supply of devices and their integration, as well as converting data from the centre to the user."
