Astaro and Utimaco's UTM launch

Vendors join forces to unveil UTM appliance

Security vendor Astaro has joined forces with Utimaco to launch what they have claimed is the first Unified Threat Management (UTM) appliance to include email encryption.

Aimed at the SME marketplace, the appliance will merge Utimaco’s email encryption technology with Astaro’s Security Gateway appliance.

Walter Schumann, vice-president of sales at Astaro, said: “SMEs are not only concerned about the cost aspect of an appliance, but it’s the fear of not being able to handle the complexity that goes with it.

“What we are doing here is packaging this into a simple to use interface. This way firms will have the technology of an enterprise solution, but the simplicity they need when used by an IT generalist instead of an IT specialist.”

Schumann claimed both Astaro’s and Utimaco’s partners will get “a competitive advantage” from the device.

“We have found after talking to customers that many of them have never even dared to ask for this type of solution. Now that it is available we are confident that we can create a demand that is fulfilled by our partners,” he said.

Graham Fox, managing director of Astaro distributor Fresh Egg, said he is seeing increased interest in the appliance.

“I think it’s another very good UTM device. Astaro is eating very rapidly into that space and it is getting better and better. The appliance is definitely the first of its kind, but it is a very competitive marketplace, especially with the likes of Fortinet out there,” he said.

“Quite a few resellers are already adopting the technology and are keen to sell it. The appliance fits very well into our portfolio.” C
