Varlink steps into PDA market

New specialist distributor launches in UK

A new specialist distributor has launched in the UK to grab a slice of the rugged PDA and mobility markets.

Varlink, based in York, officially opened for business last week and is targeting markets such as healthcare, manufacturing, retail and utilities.

It currently has several vendors signed up including PDA vendor Aceeca, barcode scanning specialists Datalogic, Opticon and Baracoda and tablet PC vendor Tatung.

Mike Pullon, managing director and founder of Varlink told CRN: “We decided to launch with a small number of manufacturers that perhaps haven’t launched in the UK or through the channel before.

“We would rather deal with a smaller number of resellers that are happy with our service rather than try and rule the world and venture into broadline,” he said.

Pullon said the distributor will provide “reasonable” credit terms, and has “invested heavily” in its website.

Alastair Edwards, senior analyst at Canalys said bringing new products to market is something broadliners often fail to do.

“If Varlink can be flexible enough to stay ahead of the competition there is no reason why it shouldn’t succeed,” he said.
