Vodafone alliance puts sting into Wasp OverNet

Wireless application service provider OverNet Data has announced its first Wireless Application Protocol-related products in conjunction with Vodafone Corporate.

Wireless application service provider (Wasp) OverNet Data has announced its first Wireless Application Protocol (Wap)-related products in conjunction with Vodafone Corporate.

David Tilston, financial director at OverNet Data, said: "A Wasp develops applications specifically tailored to wireless devices. Many companies have developed devices for Wap consumers, but we are specifically focused on business.

"If you have a mobile workforce, your employees will need to access corporate information remotely. We provide the technology so you can do that."

OverNet is making available its OND Phonebook, which allows corporate customers to upload and manage an internal phonebook on a server for their own employees; the OND Stock Level, which provides remote workers with access to their stock records from Wap-compatible phones; and OND Job Allocation to manage job allocations for remote workers.

"We are the first Wasp being pushed through a major corporate network," said Tilston, referring to the partnership with Vodafone.

OverNet has also just announced its interim results ended 30 June. The company suffered a pre-tax loss of £425,000.

However, Tilston said that because the company had floated on the Alternative Investment Market on 27 July, the figures were irrelevant. The loss was attributed to an increase in recruitment and research development costs.

Henry Beker, chairman of OverNet, said the July float raised £3.5m (£3.1m including expenses), instead of the £2m originally planned. "We are in a strong position with plenty of cash to fund the company," said Tilston.

OverNet has recently opened an office in central London and expects to boost its systems integration work in the short term.
