SCO's Tarantella spins web-ware for ASPs
Unix vendor Santa Cruz Operation made a play for the ASP market last week, with plans to launch an ASP version of its Tarantella web-enabling middleware.
Unix vendor Santa Cruz Operation (SCO) made a play for the application service provider (ASP) market last week, with plans to launch an ASP version of its Tarantella web-enabling middleware.
SCO, which only began offering Tarantella through the channel in December, will now also offer the software on a subscription basis through authorised ASPs.
The new edition is scheduled to be available in May, and the vendor will also launch a Tarantella ASP Connect programme for resellers, software vendors and original equipment manufacturers during April.
The Connect programme will provide partners with a technical and educational framework to take advantage of the ASP market, according to SCO officials.
Members of the programme will also be able to access web pages and attend seminars and events tailored to help them to develop an ASP business model.
Steve Shoaf, ASP programme director at database vendor Informix, said: "Tarantella ASP Connect is just what is needed in the ASP market. SCO is leading the way in helping resellers evolve to the ASP business model."
Although the pay-as-you-go pricing details for the new ASP edition have not been released yet, some suggestions have claimed the company expects it to be less than $1 (63p) per user, per hour.
- SCO has announced the immediate availability of its Tarantella Express software for the SCO OpenServer release 5.0 Clients can download the software or order the product through SCO's channel. Pricing starts at $745 (£471) for five concurrent users accessing Windows and Unix applications, and additional users cost $99.
