Seagate unleashes a new Cheetah
Hard drive vendor aims latest models at business user community

Storage maker Seagate has added to its Cheetah hard drive range with two models aimed at business users.
The rationale for these products - the Cheetah 15K.7 and Cheetah NS.2 - is that system builders can provide high speeds, top capacity and the highest reliability with minimum power consumption, according to Sherman Black, Seagate’s vice president of marketing and strategy for hard disk drives.
The new Cheetah drives bolster sustainability through easy drive - system integration, he claimed, and this will improve system performance, capacity and reliability.
“We know that IT budgets are constrained, and these new drives will help businesses grow in line with their needs, without involving downtime or affecting the overall reliability,” said Black.
John Rydning, IDC’s research director for hard disk drives said Seagate’s new 3.5in Cheetah disk drives will fill a critical need for both its customers and end users.
“They are looking to extend the life of existing external storage system platforms,” he said.
Meanwhile, Seagate’s Black defended the name given to the hard disk range.
"Cheetah is one of the best known and most respected brand names in the hard drive industry,” he said. “The stuff that comes after the brand name makes for very easy recognition of what's been spoken about. For example, 15K.7 means seventh generation of our 15,000rpm Cheetah. This nomenclature is well recognised within the industry.”
