Dance Your Way Around The Web

SCO has unveiled Tarantella ? a technology based around a network computer server ? as part of its Internet Way of Computing strategy.

It enables devices running Java-compatible Web browsers to access Web, mainframe, Unix, X Windows or Windows-based applications across the internet and intranet.

Currently being built into SCO?s Unix servers, it features advanced adaptive protocol, allowing the adaptation of information transfer to the bandwidth of the connection media. It also has an adaptable desktop, which can be altered to suit users? browser and access devices.

Its vision resume feature lets users disconnect from the network, change location or device type, and reconnect without loss of information or the need for shutdown and restart applications.

Ray Anderson, senior VP and general manager for client integration, said that Tarantella squashes the need for organisations to waste time rewriting applications in Java. It lets developers and administrators deploy business-critical data, and allows other information to be viewed from Web browsers even though it is not HTML-based.

The technology is an answer for organisations which are not ready to rewrite applications, but who want to take advantage of the internet and adopt a thin-client policy.
