Makers reveal spec for Net PC

Intel and Microsoft have announced a broad specification for a reference design for the Net PC ? as OEM partners are expected to introduce their machines within 90 days.

Pat Getsinger, VP of desktop products at Intel US, said users could expect to see the Net PC in business use by 1998.

The reference design is the result of collaboration between Intel, Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, Compaq and Dell. Net PCs will offer ?zero maintenance? options that claim to provide cost of ownership as low as that of NCs. All hardware devices can be managed from one point and there are remote troubleshooting options.

The Net PC specification includes automatic configuration and installation over the network, and the machines will come with a sealed case to prevent user modifications to the hardware.
