- TDK will purchase Grey Cell Systems, a privately held UK company specialising in the design and manufacture of PC card and software-based datacoms products. The acquisition will add GSM capability to TDK?s Global Networker modem/Lan PC card range.
- There was speculation that Compaq would purchase Unisys after recent discussions between the two companies in which they proposed to broaden their joint service offering. According to US reports, Compaq, which has $5 billion cash in the bank, would benefit from Unisys? service and systems integration following its purchase of Tandem.
- Action Computer Supplies has revealed that David Rothschild will step down as an executive director of the company to take on a consultancy role in retail and IT. Rothschild, who will leave in February 1998, will continue as a consultant at the mail-order firm.
- IBM distributor Hall Mark, widely tipped to be buying Bytech Systems, has moved president, George Smith, to its Munich office to supervise the company?s European acquisition strategy.
- Apple has delayed making changes to its channel strategy. Resellers are bracing themselves for the change as an announcement was due to be made at Macworld last month.
- 3Com is set to take a $375 million hit from restructuring costs generated by its acquisition of modem vendor US Robotics, according to a filing by the networking giant to the US Securities & Exchange Commission.
- PC vendor Commodore has been declared bankrupt, with the closure of 30 stores in The Netherlands and its assembly plant, after talks to rescue the company failed. Dutch PC vendor Tulip abandoned its plans to buy Commodore a month ago.
