Shoden bags up Sainsbury's storage deal

Integrator tasked with overhauling food giant's backup strategy

Storage integrator Shoden Data Systems UK has been enlisted by supermarket giant Sainsbury's to overhaul its data backup strategy.

Shoden claims to have helped the food retailer, which has 890 stores in the UK, reduce costs through the deployment of its QuickRecover backup system.

The disk-based system features technology from vendors Data Domain and Luminex and will replace the firm's tape-based backup strategy.

Tim Neale, mainframe services lead at Sainsbury's, explained: "Our tape maintenance costs were rising rapidly, we had an ageing infrastructure and we were suffering increasingly unreliable tape media.

"Other vendors offered new or different tape-based solutions, but we were attracted to Shoden's approach to move us to disk-based backups," he added.

John Taffinder, chief executive of Shoden, said: "We needed to strengthen Sainsbury's backup and disaster recovery strategies and make them more cost-effective, without moving away from the infrastructure that was already in place."
