Intrinsic aims for £100m
Dataplex deal is only the start of acquisition journey, according to managing director
Communications VAR Intrinsic Technology is aiming to become a £100m player within three years as it closes in on further acquisitions in the IT space.
The Cisco and Avaya partner leapt into the virtualisation market at the start of the year by grabbing HP, EMC, Citrix and VMware partner Dataplex out of administration.
Intrinsic managing director Mike Mason said clients were demanding Intrinsic address both their communications and IT needs.
“They are asking us to take responsibility not just for their voice, video and data but also desktop applications such as VDI and cloud,” he said. “Dataplex bolsters our capabilities in that area.”
Mason revealed privately funded Intrinsic is working on another acquisition opportunity and said future deals were likely to either extend its VDI capabilities or bulk out its existing skills.
Dataplex will add about £10m to Intrinsic’s £28m top line and Mason - who has helped build several other VARs including Elcom, TNS and ABS - said he wanted Intrinsic to be a £100m IT and comms player.
“Acquiring in the IT channel is not new to me – I feel comfortable in that space,” he said, adding that the VAR is also gunning for 30 to 40 per cent organic growth.
Mason said Dataplex has been re-established as Dataplex Systems Ltd, with no redundancies anticipated. Its demise left distributors £1.1m out of pocket, but Mason said creditors understood the circumstances behind its quick sale.
“Intrinsic has very strong relationships with all the distributors and we fully expect those strong relationships to continue,” he said.
“On the back of our strong performance in 2010 they have faith in Intrinsic’s ability to perform and I am confident we will work closely with them as a combined company.”
Martin Lulham, managing director of virtualisation VAR M-Tech Systems, said the acquisition was well timed. “2011 is potentially the year of VDI and two or three of my big accounts are looking to go 100 per cent VDI this year,” he added.
