EMC unveils 40 updates in 10-figure product investment

New technologies a go-go in busy day for storage giant

Storage giant EMC has today unleashed more than 40 products onto the market, including a sub-$10,000 storage array and a range of unified storage systems.

The VNXe system is pitched squarely at the SMB market and EMC claims it can be configured in a matter of minutes, even by a non-storage-specialised techie. The vendor added that it can support hundreds of email users, as well as virtual servers. Prices start at less than $10,000 (£6,250).

Also announced today was the VNX range of unified storage systems, which incorporate EMC's Clariion SAN technology and its Celerra NAS kit. Targeted at the higher end of the market is the Symmetrix VMAX line of software, which the vendor claims can support petabytes of information and up to five million virtual machines.

Additional backup and archiving power has been added to EMC's Data Domain wares, and the storage titan claims the improved technologies are seven times faster than competing systems.

EMC chief executive Joe Tucci (pictured) claimed today's developments form part of a multi-billion-dollar investment in the future of storage technologies.

"What you are seeing today is EMC doubling down on its core franchise: storage," he said. "The technologies are changing, the use cases are changing and the consumption models are changing.

"These new products and capabilities put us in an excellent position to capitalise on the major trends in the IT industry and place us squarely at the intersection of the biggest ones: cloud computing and big data."
