BSA hits healthcare training provider with settlement

OCB Media counts cost of unlicensed software use

Anti-piracy body the Business Software Alliance (BSA) has ordered healthcare training provider OCB Media to cough up more than £19,000 for unlicensed software use.

The Leicester-based firm was ordered to hand over £7,800 in settlement fees to the BSA, and make corrective software purchases worth £11,500, after being caught using unlicensed Microsoft and Adobe products.

Julian Swan, director of compliance marketing at the BSA, said the case highlights the need for UK plc to take software asset management more seriously.

He said: "Companies need to treat and manage their software as a business asset. By doing this, they may find they can use their software more effectively and discover they have more licenses than they need."

Michala Wardell, chair of the BSA UK Committee, added: "The abuse of intellectual property rights is a serious offence and we want to make it clear that the use of unlicensed software will not be accepted."
