The UK channel continues to adapt to fast-shifting technology demands, rising data volumes, and evolving customer expectations around performance and efficiency. Storage remains a critical foundation in that picture, enabling partners to support new workloads, scale services, and stay competitive in a market shaped by AI and other data-intensive technologies.

As a long-term contributor to the channel ecosystem, Western Digital is focused on helping partners and customers manage that growth with reliable, scalable solutions and strong technical support. In this sponsored interview, Nigel Edwards, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for North America and EMEAI, discusses why the company supports the Channel Awards, where it sees the biggest opportunities for innovation, and how Western Digital is working with partners to meet future data infrastructure needs.

Why is Western Digital proud to support the Channel Awards, and what role do these events play in the UK channel ecosystem?

Western Digital is proud to support the Channel Awards. We recognise the hard work and strong partnerships they deliver that drive the UK IT channel forward. The channel thrives on collaboration between vendors, distributors, and resellers, and these awards celebrate those shared achievements.

For us, it’s more than recognition. Connection, customers, excellence, and results are four of our core values, and being part of the UK Channel Awards directly relates to this. The Awards give us a collaborative opportunity to highlight how innovation, resilience, and customer focus are redefining the ecosystem.

How are you helping customers drive growth and navigate the biggest challenges facing the channel today, from technology adoption to competitive pressures?

The UK channel faces a dynamic and challenging environment. From rapid technology innovation (AI, machine learning, IoT) to changing market dynamics, Western Digital supports customers by offering field-proven, trusted, high-capacity solutions that deliver reliability and efficiencies at scale.

We work closely with distributors and partners, providing not only leading products but also technical expertise in the form of training and go-to-market support with marketing materials and MDF. Our focus is on simplifying technology adoption and helping customers match the right storage solution to their business needs. We help partners differentiate through quality, consistency, and service excellence. By combining local channel knowledge with our global innovation expertise, we help customers and partners make storage capacity transitions simple and sustainable to stay ahead of evolving data demands.

Which areas of innovation is Western Digital most focused on this year, and why?

Western Digital continues to focus on innovation in data infrastructure and denser HDD storage architectures that deliver the best capacity, performance, low power and reliability. As data volumes grow massively due to new technologies like AI, we are investing in solutions that deliver ever-higher capacities, improved performance, and optimized total cost of ownership.

Through close collaborations with partners, we can ensure that these innovations reach the channel effectively. We offer tailored solutions for system integrators, resellers, and businesses of any size. From use-case optimized hard drives for NAS and surveillance to energy-efficient data center drives with next-generation ePMR, HelioSeal®, and UltraSMR technology, we enable customers to handle larger workloads with greater reliability and efficiency at scale. Our focus is helping partners and customers meet increasing data storage needs and empowering them to stay competitive and future-ready in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

What advice would you give to channel partners looking to scale their business?

Scaling successfully in the channel starts with understanding customers’ business needs and challenges. Our advice is to understand workload characteristics, power, and space requirements first before making decisions. And what do you need to scale in the future? Knowing these foundational business requirements and deciding on needed storage resources based on that will help optimize total cost of ownership. Disaggregated storage platforms, for example, might be a great fit for customers that are adopting and integrating complex AI workflows in their business. By separating compute, storage, and networking, customers can gain greater flexibilities in scaling their resources separately when needed, ultimately avoiding overprovisioning.

The future of the UK channel will be defined by data growth and how it is stored, managed, processed, and used. AI, machine learning, and other technologies are playing a crucial role in this. Companies will need both capacity and flexibility to keep up. Cost efficiencies at scale and energy will also play an increasingly important role in today’s Zettabyte age. Solutions that help customers optimize existing physical footprints, while also reducing total power consumption and environmental impact will stand out. We look forward to working closely with our partners to deliver innovative, reliable, and efficient storage systems to their customers that do exactly that.
