Microsoft promises London mayor 1,000 apprentices

Software giant pledges support for Boris Johnson's aim to open up 20,000 apprenticeship places in London

Microsoft has thrown its weight behind a government initiative to tackle youth unemployment by promising to sign up 1,000 apprentices in London over the next three years.

According to a report from ThisIsMoney, the software giant's head of skills and economic affairs, Stephen Uden (pictured) outlined Microsoft's plans in central London today.

He said: "London is the engine room of the UK economy and, over the next three years, Microsoft intends to deliver 1,000 apprenticeships in the capital through our network of partners."

The announcement coincides with the start of the government's National Apprenticeship Week, which is calling on high-profile firms to create apprentice opportunities for young people.

The campaign has also won the support of Virgin Media, which has pledged to offer 90 apprenticeships this year.

London mayor Boris Johnson hailed these pledges of support as a major boost to his campaign to lay on 20,000 apprenticeships in London before the end of the academic year.

He added: "I applaud the companies that have announced their commitment to apprenticeships. London's businesses need to redouble their efforts to save what could otherwise become a wasted generation."
