Western European PC market surges, but storm may loom – CONTEXT
Windows 10’s end-of-support deadline has become one of the strongest upgrade triggers in a decade, says senior retail analyst James Bates
All major PC segments have been through soaring growth in October across the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, according to insights from CONTEXT TotalMarket.
Desktop PCs skyrocketed 48 per cent in Western Europe, driven by demand from gamers, creators and performance-focused consumers who prioritise power, cooling capabilities and longevity.
The market was also influenced by vendors promoting AI PCs, systems equipped with dedicated NPUs and being marketed as devices offering enhanced on-device security, productivity and media capabilities.
Early data suggests European consumers are for now being receptive.
Notebook revenues surged 26 per cent, driven by widespread replacement of devices unable to support Windows 11.
Tablet PCs soared 21 per cent confirming their ongoing role as secondary devices in hybrid work and entertainment.
“Windows 10’s end-of-support deadline has become one of the strongest upgrade triggers we’ve seen in a decade,” said James Bates, senior retail analyst at CONTEXT.
“Many consumers who delayed replacement now find that their devices simply cannot run the operating system required for secure use.
“This aligns with the natural refresh cycle of the large number of notebooks purchased during the pandemic.”
Bates added that what also stood out was consumers’ willingness to step up their hardware.
PC users are not just replacing old models but rather upgrading to systems that can support modern software, as well as gaming and creative workloads, he explained.
Expected slowdown?
Despite this rise, CONTEXT warns that the market might face challenges in 2026, as a significant amount of the current demand is certainly being pulled forward by the Windows 10 deadline.
Once the urgency fades, replacement cycles may go back to longer intervals, leading to softer volumes.
Costs for components such as DRAM and NAND Flash are also expected to increase throughout 2026, reflected in retail prices at a time when consumer sentiment remains fragile.
