Telent gets green light for Herefordshire traffic contract

The deal extends the M Group company’s 25-year relationship with the council

Telent has secured a new arrangement with Herefordshire Council to maintain the county’s traffic signal network, bolstering its footprint across the West Midlands and surrounding region.

The firm will cover 97 traffic signal sites across Herefordshire, more than 80 per cent of which currently use Telent signal controllers.

Around 85 per cent of the sites are also connected to the company’s Optima Hub remote monitoring platform, which provides engineers with real-time visibility of traffic signal assets.

Telent said the technology allows maintenance teams to identify and respond to issues remotely, particularly across Herefordshire’s largely rural and geographically dispersed network.

“Supporting a largely rural network requires both local understanding and the right technology,” said Samantha Harvey, head of operations at Telent.

“By combining long-standing knowledge of the Herefordshire network with tools such as Optima Hub, we can help maintain reliable performance and respond quickly when issues arise.

“This contract reflects the strength of our presence across the region and our continued commitment to supporting local authorities with reliable traffic technology services.”

Ed Bradford, major contracts programme director at Herefordshire Council, added: “Telent’s knowledge of our network, combined with its remote monitoring capabilities, provides valuable support in helping us manage assets effectively and maintain a dependable service for residents, businesses and visitors.”

The deal extends a relationship between Telent and Herefordshire Council spanning more than 25 years and comes amid a wider push by the company across the region.

Telent currently provides traffic technology, maintenance and monitoring services to local authorities across the West Midlands and surrounding areas.

This comes shortly after M Group's technology MD Georgia Grimes told CRN she sees three main avenues for growth for Telent: doing more with existing customers in sectors such as transport, using M Group's relationships to expand into water and energy and targeting adjacent markets including defence and airports.

The contract will also sit alongside M Group’s existing highway and infrastructure maintenance work in Herefordshire.

In January, the group was named preferred bidder by Herefordshire Council for a contract to deliver public realm services across the county.

The deal came into effect in June.

The announcement also marks Telent's latest contract win since the start of 2026, following a series of new and expanded agreements with organisations such as South Western Railway, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Authority, Heathrow Airport, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Thames Valley Police and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, Sizewell C and the Royal Air Force.

Telent ranks number ten on CRN’s Top VARs list.
