Systemax exec fired after internal investigation
Gilbert Fiorentino sacked from boardroom role at Misco and WStore owner following anonymous allegations
Leading Systemax executive Gilbert Fiorentino is to be fired after allegations from an anonymous whistleblower prompted an investigation into the firm's Floridian business.
The New York state-based reseller revealed last month that its audit committee was, with independent legal assistance, investigating its operations in Miami. The probe was launched following allegations of an unspecified nature from a nameless tipster.
The online retail behemoth, which owns UK VARs Misco and WStore, has now confirmed that, as a result of the committee's findings, Fiorentino is to be shown the door. The outgoing chief executive, technology products, has been placed on administrative leave until his employer can terminate his tenure, pursuant to its contractual obligations.
Fiorentino served as boss of two of Systemax's most prominent online resale brands: CompUSA and TigerDirect, both of which are based in Miami. He founded the latter in the 1980s before selling up to Systemax in 1995. He joined the boardroom set-up of his firm's new owner seven years ago.
Robert Leeds is to serve as chief executive, technology products on an interim basis, reporting to his brother – Systemax chairman Richard Leeds.
"We appreciate that our internal processes facilitated the efforts of the individual who brought these matters to our attention, and we appreciate the diligent work done by our audit committee and its independent counsel to thoroughly evaluate the complaints," said Richard Leeds.
"Systemax's technology products businesses benefit from the leadership of a strong team and the hard work of many great employees throughout the organisation. We thank them for their continued support and dedication and look forward to a promising future."
