ServersPlus targets techies with Pimp My Microserver

Winner will see their design go into limited production run

Servers Plus is aiming to give JLS and Manchester United a run for their money this Christmas with its Pimp My Microserver 2012 calendar.

The calendar will feature the finalists in its contest of the same name, the winner of which will be determined at the end of this month.

A month ago, the server supplier invited fanboys to submit designs of customised HP microservers. The shortlist of 16, which can be found here, includes designs based on Doctor Who's Tardis, a Rubik's cube and a beer fridge.

Whoever garners the most votes will see their design go into a limited production run of 50.

James Yates, business manager at Servers Plus, said the contest had been inspired by the growing popularity of HP's entry-level microservers among the tech community. He claimed Servers Plus had sold more than 1,000 this year.

"They are really gaining quite a following because of how versatile they are – people are using them for home servers and for home labs," he said. "Because they are quite sleek and sit on people's benches and desks, rather than being hidden away, we thought we could maybe personalise them."

Yates claimed there were more than 300 entries. "Some of them were weird and wacky whereas others were very technical in the level of detail," he said.

"I think it's the first IT product that will have its own fanzine calendar."
