Webroot to exit email market, sources say
EMEA channel boss reportedly on the way out as vendor bets big on mobile security
Webroot plans to cease support of its email security product in two years' time, ChannelWeb understands.
The vendor reportedly contacted partners recently to announce that its Email Security Service offering is entering the end-of-life process. Sources suggest the vendor plans to stop supporting the products at the end of 2013.
At the same time, it is understood that Webroot is introducing a minimum order value - believed to equate to between 50 and 100 units - for its web security offering.
Email archiving customers have been hived off to Sonian, and the cloud specialist will be working with long-time Webroot partner EPA, which has been appointed its Master Reseller partner for the UK.
Sources also indicate a number of staff, including EMEA channel director Ian Moyse, are departing the company.
It is understood that some functions, such as renewals, have moved in recent weeks from the UK office, in Bracknell, to Dublin. Staff levels in the UK are thought to be drastically reduced.
One source, who wished to remain anonymous, questioned Webroot's tactics of focusing on its nascent SecureAnywhere mobile security offering.
"Webroot is effectively bailing out its two major products and betting the farm on unproven technology," said the source. "Ian is Mr Webroot and his departure is an indication of the firm's direction."
Eamonn Doyle, chief executive of rival vendor Bloxx, said his firm would do all it could to help any customers left in limbo.
"The situation is only just unfolding," he said. "But, as it emerges, if anyone has any concerns about support, we can work out some way of getting them onto Bloxx in an ultra-cost-effective manner."
Webroot declined to comment and Moyse was unavailable.
