Proact launches enterprise answer to Dropbox

Storage integrator dabbles in product development

Storage integrator Proact has said the hacking issues surrounding Dropbox "could not have come at a better time" as it launches its answer to the service in the form of Probox.

The online file-sharing service, which has been 12 months in the making, marks the beginning of Proact's diversification into product development.

Free cloud file-sharing site Dropbox recently upgraded its security after hackers gained access to service users' email addresses.

Proact's offering, which is available to use on mobile devices as well as standard platforms, is designed to prevent data leakage while still delivering functionality to users and security control to businesses, according to the integrator.

Proact's commercial director Mark Butcher said file-sharing security is of paramount concern for businesses.

"Corporate information is leaking out of every hole. [Security] issues with Dropbox were ignored; it is only when you see data coming out left, right and centre that people start to listen," he added.

"There are dozens of file-sharing services out there with similar offerings, but they all lack ultimate control [for businesses]. If [a company] has 1,000 users and 50 use Dropbox and 100 use Skydrive, for example, businesses have no idea who owns the data and where in the world it is stored; they lose control."
