HP back in tablet game with business-focused ElitePad

Vendor rejoins the mobile fray with Windows 8 device for enterprise market

HP is leaping back into the tablet game and is going squarely for the business market with the launch of the ElitePad 900.

Announced today, the device (pictured) features a 10.1in screen and a 16x10 aspect ratio. It weighs 1.5lbs, is 9.2mm thick and is powered by Intel mobile chip technology and the Windows 8 operating system. It is due to hit shelves in the US in January, and HP indicated that pricing information will be released nearer launch.

The vendor claims the ElitePad allows users to input commands via touch, stylus or voice. Being launched alongside the device are a range of HP Smart Jackets, which include a range of cases and accessories, such a keyboard dock and USB and HDMI connectivity slots.

IT managers can benefit from HP Global Series Support and a standard one-year warranty, with an option to extend this to three years, said HP.

Todd Bradley, executive vice president of the vendor's Printing and Personal Systems unit, said: "Businesses used to face a tough purchase decision: how to find a product that will delight employees and help them be more productive, while also making sure IT can secure and manage it. The HP ElitePad meets all those tests. It combines the great style and user experience consumers demand with the features IT requires."

HP took its leave of the tablet market last summer when it canned its TouchPad device just a month after its release. Since it reaffirmed its commitment to the client computing market, speculation has been rife as to when and how it might seek to re-enter the tablet space.
