Samsung $1bn patent fine reconsidered in court

South Korean vendor and bitter rival Apple go back to court so judge can review jury's decision

Arch rivals Samsung and Apple are set to return to court so a judge can review the jury's decision to award Apple $1bn (£621m) in damages.

Samsung is keen to have the verdict overturned, or at the least the sum reduced.

However, Apple wants the amount increased to about $1.7bn and for the judge to ban some of Samsung's handsets including the Galaxy S2.

The two firms are locked in a bitter patent battle spanning 10 countries, with both trying to get each other's products banned from sale in various territories.

Last month Samsung filed papers alleging that Apple's iPad mini infringed eight of its patents.

In October, a preliminary ruling in the US found that Samsung infringed four of Apple's intellectual property patents, but a final International Trade Commission call on the judge's findings will be made in February.
