New iPhone rumoured to be landing in less than a month

Sources claim Apple will unveil the next-generation iPhone at an event on 10 September

Apple is expected to announce the latest addition to its iPhone range within the next month, according to sources.

Tech site AllThingsD claims to have been told by insiders that 10 September is the day to watch, with some expecting the new version to be named iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C or iPhone 6.

The date would fall in line with the vendor's previous timing - last year, the iPhone 5 was launched on 13 September.

Apple has shared no details of the new device, but it is widely thought it will be aimed at the mid-market in an effort to stave off competition from booming Android popularity.

Apple's iOS has been caught up dramatically by Android-based devices in the past year in both the smartphone and tablet arenas.

IDC claims that in Q2, Android tablet shipments accounted for 62.6 per cent of the global market, while iOS captured 32.5 per cent - a near reversal of last year's figures. In the smartphone industry, iOS accounts for 13.2 per cent of the market, a figure dwarfed by Android's 79.3 per cent share, accoriding to IDC.

Onlookers expect the new phone to include a fingerprint-based security feature, while others predict the handsets will be available in a range of colours instead of the traditional black and white options currently on offer.
