Epson settles out of court in patents stoush

Dynamic Cassette International agrees not to make compatible cartridges

Print cartridge maker Dynamic Cassette International (DCI) – trading as Jet Tec in the UK – has settled out of court with Seiko Epson Corporation, following the printer maker's allegations that its cartridges infringed Epson patents.

The settlement figure was not revealed. However, according to vendor PR, the deal was "to the satisfaction of both parties". A trial had been scheduled in the High Court, London.

"As part of the settlement, DCI has ceased to manufacture new cartridges compatible with Epson printers. All other terms of the settlement are confidential," its statement reads.

The legal action against DCI was initiated in 2011, and follows the vendor's three-year 2007 action against Medea International, which was also forced to take its Epson-compatible cartridges off the market.

Epson has affirmed it will continue to protect its brand and technologies, in part to support its channel partners and customers.

The Epson Group, which has 68,000 employees worldwide, makes inkjet printers and printing systems, 3LCD projectors, industrial robots, sensors and other micro-devices.
