High-end projectors still selling well worldwide

First half stats from PMA Research suggest sales exceeded $1bn

Projectors offering at least 4,000 lumens of brightness – the high-end and digital cinema category – were the brightest spot in global projector sales through the first six months of 2013, according to projector market analyst PMA Research.

Shipments worth more than $1bn were made, reflecting a six per cent sales expansion by volume from the first half of 2012, the firm said in its announcement. Digital cinema volumes have passed a milestone, it said.

"In the market for super-bright projectors, excluding d-cinema, manufacturers continued to expand the breadth and depth of their product lines to meet growing demand in developing countries and the accelerating shift to higher-resolution projectors in advanced economies," said PMA.

Digital cinema projectors alone topped 100,000 units worldwide, and, while the highest-end products declined slightly, some of that was made up by increased sales of cheaper models for smaller screens and in developing countries including China and India.

Developing lands are spending more as the global economy stabilises on products such as public-display projectors and devices for higher education.

"And despite the uneven pace of economic recovery in advanced economies, sales of high-end projectors managed to stay relatively unchanged compared with the first half of last year," the analyst said.
