Samsung unveils first Tizen-based smartphone

New open-source-derived operating system could be rival for Google Android

Smartphone market leader Samsung has announced the release of a handset based on Tizen, a new OS.

In a move that could reduce its dependence on Google's Android OS - current top dog in the mobile phone market - the Korean company is set to present its Tizen-based Samsung Z to the Tizen Developer Conference in San Francisco tomorrow.

Samsung's official global Samsung Tomorrow blog said the device, which will also feature a fingerprint reader, will be the first commercially available smartphone based on Tizen.

"Samsung Z offers a unique user experience with advanced web performance and usability," it wrote. "Complete with a 4.8in HD Super AMOLED display and a 2.3 GHz Quad-core processor."

According to the vendor, the new device - shipped first to Russia, from Q3 of this year - will be both efficient and lightweight, as well as offer "faster" web browsing and more effective application utilisation. Memory management, boot time, scrolling and rendering would also be better, it suggested.

A promotional one-year programme for developers wanting to create apps for Tizen devices is also being launched, Samsung said.

According to several gadget blogs from around the world, Samsung's Tizen launch has been delayed for some time but the vendor plans to introduce as many Tizen-based devices as possible.

Tizen is a Linux Foundation open source project. The intention is to provide an OS which can promote true mobility across multiple web-connected devices - including wearables, TVs, smartphones, and in-vehicle hardware.

"Mobile operators can work with device partners to customise the operating system and user experience to meet the needs of specific customer segments or demographics," according to an explainer on Tizen.org.

"For application developers and ISVs, Tizen offers the power of native application development with the flexibility of unparalleled HTML5 support. Tizen also offers the potential for application developers to extend their reach to new smart devices running Tizen."

Members of the Tizen Association steering group so far include major players such as Vodafone, NTT DoCoMo, Fujitsu, Huawei, Intel and LG, as well as Samsung.
